ITTP NEXUS in Europe and Beyond

132 billion illicit cigarettes are trafficked every year across Europe, North Africa, the Middle East and Central Asia. The figure emerges from a study, carried out by Transcrime, on illicit flows of cigarettes involving more than 150 countries. ITTP NEXUS in Europe and Beyond identified and quantified the illicit flows of cigarettes moving to EU countries across North Africa, the Middle East, and Central Asia and highlighted the existing connections with the political, legislative and socio-economic frameworks. Through this process, the study provided an assessment of the facilitators behind transnational cigarette trafficking.
